BELT HAULS HIGHWAY FILL 13 MILES. FUEL COSTS ARE CHOPPED BY ABOUT ONE-THIRD
The paper reports how a 13-mile conveyor teamed with a fleet of double-wagon haulers is moving about 25 million tons of fill for an Interstate 80 grading and drainage job at the west side of Salt Lake City. For about a quarter of its run, the belt travels over a causeway embankment from Antelope Island to the mainland. Use of the conveyor eliminated the need for building a 70-ft-wide road for heavy haulers along the entire route.
