PLASTIC DEFORMATION OF FINNISH ASPHALT ROADS

PAEAELLYSTEIDEN PLASTISET DEFORMAATIOT

The aim of this study is to give a general view of the plastic deformation of asphalt mixes and to determine the share of plastic deformation in the forming of ruts in Finnish Roads. It is mainly based on earlier research on wear and damage to asphalt pavements and on test roads carried out in the Finnish Road and Traffic Laboratory. Accurate profile measurements were made on six roads in the spring and in the fall of 1978. On certain roads plastic deformation occurred and could b recognised more clearly on gap-graded asphalt pavements but, mainly because of the wear caused by studded tyres, the share of plastic deformation could not be reliably determined. In some cases, however, plastic deformation seems to be as large as the wear caused by studded tyres. through-running bus operations, and the degree of commitment
