WAKE AND PROPELLER TESTING
The Author, of the HSVA (the Hamburg Ship Model Basin), discusses the methods used in model-testing facilities for investigating the interactions between hulls and propellers in simulated wake-fields, and examines in detail the problems involved. After a brief introduction in which the need for such investigations is explained, the paper is arranged under the headings:--The Wake; Scale Effects of Wake; Scale Effect on the Velocity Distribution in the Propeller Plane; Tangential and Radial Component of the Wake; The Parameters on which the Propeller Characteristics in Non-Uniform Flow Depend; Scale Effect of Pressure Distribution and Cavitation of Propeller Blade Sections; Techniques for Simulating Ship-Wakes in Model Testing Facilities; Froude Scaling; Nuclei Spectra; New Instrumentation for Wake Simulation Problems. Under this last heading, the Author discusses LASER velocimetry and its usefulness for the measurement of velocity distribution in planes ahead and astern of a rotating model of full-scale propeller without disturbing the flow. A LASER velocimeter system in the medium-size cavitation tunnel at the HSVA is briefly described, and a sample of results obtained with it is presented which clearly show the variation of the axial velocity behind the individual blades of the propeller. Other results, from a towing tank elsewhere, are also included and show axial wake distributions obtained with a LASER velocimeter. In a brief conclusion to the paper, it is mentioned that, despite wonderful new instruments with on-line data analysing equipment, there remains much hard work to be done before we can answer all the questions concerning propeller/hull interactions.
