Influence of the Red Box for Motorcycle to the Travel Speed and Traffic Flow at the Margonda-Juanda Signalized Intersection

The red box for motorcycles at a signalized intersection is a designated space for motorcyclists to wait at a red light. Motorcyclists stop in front of other types of vehicles and can initially proceed through the intersection when the light turns green. The aim of this paper is to analyse the influence of the red box at the signalized intersection to the travel speed and traffic flow. One of the intersections that has implemented the red box is the Margonda-Juanda signalized intersection in the city of Depok. The data were gathered at this intersection. They were the data of travel speeds and traffic volume of motorcycles and car users at the intersection. Those data were analyzed using the MKJI (Indonesian Highway Capacity Manual) method to determine the distribution of the traffic flow. The results of the study show that the traffic flow of motorcycles and cars increase. The traffic flows of motorcycles and cars are 4.19% and 6.08%. Meanwhile, the travel speeds have also increased. They are 4.24% and 7.28%. It can be drawn that the implementation of the red box increased the travel flow and travel speed at Margonda-Juanda signalized intersection in Depok.
