RAILWAY DIESEL FUEL FROM COAL
The production of an excellent diesel oil from a wide variety of carbon sources can be achieved by the application of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. This process makes it possible to convert carbon-containing feeds such as wood, bark, straw, coke and, most importantly, coal locally available in widely dispersed locations in Canada into high quality diesel fuel. At this time the available Fishcer-Tropsch technology is not developed to its full potential and requires a substantial R&D effort to bring it into line with current market demands, modern technical possibilities and today's economics. It is recommended that a broad and coordinated effort be made to develop this technology for Canadian needs.
