Evaluation and Analysis of Soil and Solid Waste Pollution to Heavy Metal in Arterial Roads of North West Iran
The 3200km Arterial Roads Network in North West Iran is considered to be one of the most important economic as well as social arterial roads in Eastern/Western Azerbaijan and the Ardebil provinces. In addition to the vital role in domestic zone freight and passenger transportation, it also endorses an important role in commercial ties in between North and West neighboring countries, and ultimately with European states. The reason for this concern is that this network has a considerable volume of light and heavy vehicles which have always been seen as the main generators of air pollution. There is also the issue of soil contamination of the surrounding roads, since they face a contamination risk due to the solid waste that is generated by road trips or accidents. With many places, studies reveal that soil contamination in the surrounding arterial roads would have a direct relationship with traffic and the exhaust from vehicles, engines or tires. First of all, in the present study, the authors have tried to draw contour lines of traffic, accident risk and waste contamination through using GIS or other software. Later they present an evaluation and analysis of 24 soil samples with the atomic absorption method of major traffic routes under the study area, known as ARAS Free Zone’s route (Tabriz-Jolfa Arterial road), and the limit of heavy metal contamination computed by Muller Index (Igeo). Finally, through statistical analysis and the Pearson correlation method, the correlation of the contaminations with each other and also with transportation and waste parameters have found that after drawing anomaly maps in ArcGIS10 software, the amount of heavy metal variation with transportation parameters has been evaluated. Based on Muller Index, Co,Cr,Cu,Zn,Pb fell into class 0 (unpolluted) while Ni fell into class 1 (unpolluted to moderately polluted), while Cd was in class 2 (moderately polluted), only Fe concentrations are in class 3 (moderately to strongly polluted). With the Igeo value less than 1 (Igeo<1), it can be said that this area can be considered unpolluted by metals. However the overlying of anomaly and traffic maps and also Pearson correlation results reveal the significant correlation of heavy metals variation with transportation parameters.
