Economic Impacts of the Reversible Traffic Lane System in Urban Areas

The reversible traffic lane system in urban areas, as one of the traffic regulation methods, is applied in order to establish better relation between traffic supply and demand during daily peak periods. Optimal management of traffic demand within the existing capacity of the road transport infrastructure, which is particularly important in urban areas where there are no opportunities for large road expansions, is achieved by the reversible traffic lane system. The case study, which proposes the application of this system in the city of Zagreb, has been created to determine and quantify the economic impacts of the reversible traffic lane system in urban areas. Quantification of the economic impacts is based on the results of microsimulation. The microsimulation is created for two scenarios – existing situation and planned solution. The authors conducted a cost-benefit analysis based on the relevant economic impacts, which have been quantified using a simulation comparison analysis. Apart from the cost-benefit, the analysis of sensitivity and risk was made in order to present economic feasibility and the necessity to implement such systems in urban areas.
