Development of Green Highway Technology Investment Evaluation System (G-TIES)

South Korea is the world’s 8th largest CO₂ emitter in 2010 according to the report by the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center of the U.S. Department of Energy. It was reported by the Greenhouse Gas Inventory & Research Center of Korea that the road sector contributes about 15% of the total national greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector in Korea. To reduce GHGs from the road sector, various green highway technologies have been proposed and developed. Therefore, an appropriate method to evaluate applicability of green highway technology was in need to be developed for Korea. This paper introduces a system for measuring the effectiveness of existing or new Green Highway technologies named as the Green Highway Technology Investment Evaluation System (GTIES). The system has functions for estimating the amount of carbon emissions and energy use by road type and road life cycle. Additional functions include evaluating the effects of green highway technologies on the reduction of carbon emissions and energy consumption in terms of a technology, a road project, and roads of administrative area. Application case study results are provided in this paper.
