First on to scene: Awareness of hazard by electric motorcycles

Spezifische Gefahren von Elektromotorraedern

The number of electric motorcycles on the road has increased rapidly over the recent years, and they are becoming more noticeable in the general traffic. This new motorcycle trend is expected to increase more rapidly over the coming decade as electric propelled vehicles become more accepted. Moreover, the technology becomes more accessible as companies focusing on this market grow and become recognizable brands. As with most new technologies, it is necessary to better understand the safety issues with electric motorcycles, to improve safety. Today voltage is being pushed well beyond the touch-safe limits of 60 VDC and the energy capacity results in a potentially high short circuit current. The safety issues addressed in this paper are the ones which arise in case of accidents. This increases hazard risk of emergency response personnel and general public who are first to scene on accident sides. The increased risk is due to the lack of awareness and understanding on electric motorcycle characteristics. Throughout own experience and a research on user's experience, some of the most common hazards of electric motorcycles are identified; hazards that experienced ICE motorcyclist's or emergency personnel are commonly not aware of. This identification is the first step towards lowering hazard risks that the new technology brings to the general infrastructure. Two approaches are proposed to lower this risk. Firstly, by educating both emergency staff and general public on the response to electric motorcycle accidents. Secondly, by implementing system protocols that eliminates the risk factors.
