Modeling the Effects of Road Transportation Developments on Iran's Economic Growth

The road transportation today is an important part of Iran's economy, and since its role is basic, it highly affects the process of the country's economic growth. This sector encompasses activities that are extensively involved in such grounds as production, distribution, consumption, and services, and plays an undeniable role in all the economic activities. Therefore, considering the importance of the development of the road transportation network and the role it plays in the economy, investing in it will considerably enhance the economic growth, specifically in the developing countries. The qualitative/quantitative changes in this productive factor can highly affect the economic growth of the transportation sector and, hence, the whole economy. Meanwhile, the road transportation, compared with other modes, is more important in Iran because its share in displacing passengers and goods is more than 90%. On this basis, paying precise and comprehensive attention to this mode and its constituent elements is a necessity for meeting the objectives of the growth and development plans. It is necessary, therefore, that the effects of the road transportation, considering its importance and the role it plays, be identified. Effort has been made in this paper to investigate the impacts of the road transportation development on Iran's economic growth during the period 1974-2011 using vector auto-regression methods for the model estimation. Results have shown that in the long term, the road transportation development positively affects the economic growth. To see how the changes in this variable's value-added affect the economic growth, the authors have used the method of analyzing the prediction error.
