STRENGTH OF LARGE TANKERS
The evolution in tanker size and the development of methods of assessing primary structural scantlings are examined. The various aspects of structural strength are considered and the increasing importance of transverse strength criteria is discussed. The methods currently employed by Lloyds Register of Shipping for direct calculation by computer of structural behavior is illustrated in detail. Consideration is also given to detail design of girder webs in respect to plate buckling, stiffener requirements and the effect of perforations. Future research activities and developments of analytical systems are also discussed.
