GROWTH AND CHANGE IN RURAL AMERICA

This volume is intended to provide professionals in the land use field with a better understanding of the extent and nature of population change in nonmetropolitan areas, the type of development associated with this change, and the difficulty of guiding this growth in a manner than enhances rather than damages the quality of the rural environment. The first half of the book examines the shift of population in recent years from urban and suburban areas to rural areas and some of the reasons for it. The second half considers the implications for land use policy that local governments in these area must face to avoid duplicating the sprawl that occurred in the suburbs in the 1950 and '60s and to maintain a balance between agricultural needs and the needs of small town.
