INTERNATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS OF INTACT STABILITY STANDARDS
The development of the intact stability standards recommended for passenger and cargo ships under 100 m. in length and for fishing vessels by IMCO is discussed, based upon analyses of existing national practices and the stability characteristics of existing ships together with those which had become casualties. The evidence which has confirmed the existence of underdeck voids in grain loaded ships is outlined, and the stability standard under consideration which will take into account the adverse heeling effects of grain surface shifts. Bulk cargoes other than grain have been the subject of an international recommendation and this is discussed together with some fundamental factors currently under study, which eventually might be incorporated in a future international stability standard.
