ITS Sensors and Architectures for Traffic Management and Connected Vehicles

Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) offer improvements in traffic flow, prediction and safety, while contributing to reductions in vehicle emissions.Sensor applications and data requirements for several ITS strategies are described. Traffic sensors gather data in support of incident detection, transportation demand management, adaptive signal controls, freeway ramp metering, and the dispatching of emergency vehicles. As traffic sensor data integrates with data from connected vehicles, cell phones and Bluetooth devices, increasingly accurate and timely information on traffic flow become afailable. The role of regional traffic management centers in collocating information from multiple agencies is examined. Problems in the introduction of automated traffic control and connected vehicles are examined, while the benefits that systems engineering and architectures bring to ITS are described. Data fusion techniques and their benefits to traffic management described in detail. The book is written for transportation institute and highway agency personnel, and transportation engineering students.
