Systematic Review of Factors Affecting Driving and Motor Vehicle Transportation among People with Autism Spectrum Disorder

This article reports the results of a systematic literature review undertaken to assess the literature on factors affecting driving and motor vehicle transportation as experienced by people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The author conducted a search of 8 databases, from which she identified 22 studies that met the inclusion criteria. Those 22 studies included 2,919 participants across six countries. There were 364 individuals with ASD and 2,555 parents of youth with ASD. Thirteen of the studies focused on factors affecting driving, such as getting a driver’s license, driving confidence; driving behavior; and driving skills. There were 9 studies that covered public and/or school transportation, including rates of public transit use, accessibility, costs, and safety. The author concludes by calling for a dual strategy of increased research in this area as well as increased support for people with ASD in the area of transportation.
