Rapid Repair of Earthquake-Damaged Reinforced Concrete Bridges

The objective of this project is to develop guidelines for the transportation industry for rapidly repairing earthquake-damaged reinforced concrete bridge columns with different types and levels of damage. Recent studies in the technical literature on repair have demonstrated that different techniques can be a viable option for restoring the use of earthquake-damaged reinforced concrete (RC) bridge columns, even those columns that have been severely damaged. Furthermore, other studies have confirmed the feasibility of implementing certain repair techniques within a short timeframe, thereby making them suitable for the purpose of rapid repair. In order to design and implement the repair, the damage extent and type of damage must be quantified, and an appropriate repair method must be identified. The guidelines developed in this project will help identify appropriate repair systems corresponding to the damage observed. The guidelines produced will enable bridge engineers and inspectors to make rapid, effective, and cost-beneficial decisions regarding post-earthquake repair of bridge columns, which are critical to the transportation industry.
