Risk of Motor Vehicle Accidents Related to Sleepiness at the Wheel: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
This literature review focused on the relationship between sleepiness while driving and motor vehicle accidents. Ultimately 17 observational studies published between 1993 and 2014 were further analyzed. A positive association between sleepiness and accidents was found and it is suggested that sleepiness at the wheel should be included in determining medical fitness to drive. In addition to sleepiness, behavior and sleep disorders are also discussed as crash risk factors.
