THE RATIONAL DESIGN OF PACKING BOXES OF MARINE STEAM TURBINES

A packing box for a high-pressure marine steam turbine is described which improves the seal on the steam inlet side of a turbine housing. The method makes use of an additional chamber connected with the pressure chamber or one of the intermediate bleeds, in addition to the common intermediate chambers connected with the small equalizing tank and the suction line. By using an additional connection between the packing box and the turbine, partial compensation is attained for losses in efficiency due to leakage. Formulas are derived for the optimum distribution of a given number of slots in the first and second section of the packing box at any steam flow rate.
