Legion for AIMSUN: modelling the interactions between pedestrians, light rail and general traffic
As populations continue to urbanise and inhabit denser residential areas and as road networks remain congested, the number of walking trips will continue to rise. Hence, the need to ensure planners and engineers consider pedestrians in their planning and modelling work becomes increasingly important. Until recently, concurrent simulation modelling of pedestrians and vehicles was not common practice. This paper outlines a case study of a proposed light rail system where there existed a strong need to analyse the impact of light rail vehicles and general traffic interacting in a shared environment as well as pedestrians crossing at signalised intersections. The use of Legion for Aimsun software allowed for detailed analysis of all aspects of the network, for all modes and all users. Further applications of this type of analysis include detailed design of pedestrian infrastructure and public transport stops.
