Third Tunnel Planned for Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts
Plans are underway to construct a new 7-mile-long tunnel to carry wastewater from a wastewater treatment plant in Carson, California to outfall pipelines extending into the Pacific Ocean. The Clearwater Project tunnel will cost $700 million and will be able to convey the wastewater flow that is currently being handled by two aging tunnels. Existing tunnels do not meet current seismic design standards and they cross two fault lines - the Palos Verdes and Cabrillo faults. Details of the tunnel's design and plans for construction are presented here.
