DETERMINING THE STRESSES IN A NONUNIFORM PLATE WITH A STRAIGHT-LINE CRACK

An analysis is carried out of the problem involving the theory of elasticity of two half-planes with different elastic properties and joined along some straight line. Along the joint line there exists a straight-line crack of length 2 l. At an infinite distance from the crack a uniform tensile force p = constant is applied perpendicularly to the line of the crack. The author determines the value of normal and tangential stresses along the line joining the two half-planes of the plate. Stress path relationships for the normal and tangential components are derived and demonstrated for a particular case. Given an l -value of unity and certain constant modulus of elasticity values and values of Poissons ratio, the normal and tangential stresses (relative to p) are plotted as a function of x, the coordinate measured from the midpoint of the crack.
