Statistical Methods and Safety Data and Analysis
This issue contains twenty-four papers concerning statistical methods and safety data and analysis. Specific topics covered are as follows: methodology to backcalculate individual speed data originally aggregated by road detectors; traffic conflict-based before-after study; evaluating bicycle safety in Vancouver, Canada; and evaluating the impact of socioeconomics, land use, built environment, and road facility on cyclist safety. Additional topics include impact of congestion and traffic flow on crash frequency and severity; representations of road user volume and their impact on postencroachment time; incorporating a safety index into pathfinding; and assessing safety of signalized intersections. This issue also covers intersection safety management with connected vehicles; using naturalistic driving data to develop a typology of speeding episodes; factors affecting classification of road segments into high- and low-speed collision regimes; and analysis of bicycle accidents to improve cyclist safety in Vienna, Austria. Further topics include evaluating influence of neighboring structures on spatial crash frequency modeling and site-ranking performance; comparative assessment of safety indicators for vehicle trajectories on highways; analysis and validation of surrogate safety measures; and exploring vehicle-pedestrian crash severity factors on the basis of in-car black box recording data. Further topics covered in this issue include evaluating aging pedestrian crash severity for improved prediction accuracy; examining injury severity of not-at-fault drivers in two-vehicle crashes; effects of demographics and neighborhood environment on pedestrian injury severity; and investigation of the effectiveness of high-visibility crosswalks on pedestrian safety using crash surrogates. Additional topics include predicting day and night traffic volumes on rural roads for statistical road safety modeling; accounting for driver distraction and socioeconomic characteristics in a crash risk index; development and application of pedestrian safety performance functions to prioritize locations in Seattle, Washington; and investigation of the effect of super sharrows on cyclist and vehicle behavior.
