SEAT BELTS - CALCULATED EFFECTS OF 100 PER CENT USE OF SEAT BELTS

BILBAELTEN - BERAEKNADE EFFEKTER AV 100 PROCENT BILBAELTESANVAENDNING

This report is aimed at describing the use of safety belts in Sweden and to evaluate the gains in less killed and injured if all were using safety belts. Furthermore, an evaluation has been made of the gains of national economy that would be attained if everybody were using safety belts. The information on the use of safety belts are coming from measurements performed by the National Road Safety Office (TSV) at 60 places in Sweden. If everybody were using safety belts, there should be almost 4000 fewer traffic victims, including 200 killed. The community's annual saving would be about 320 million skr. At the present the use of seat belts is 88 per cent outside densely built-up areas and 75 per cent inside densely built-up areas. In back seat of cars the use of seat belts is very restricted.
