Retro-reflectorization is the cheapest and most practical method to make traffic signs glow in the dark in the same shape and colors as in daylight. Modern retro-reflective surface materials with encapsulated glass lenses (about 60 million per square meter) have a reflective power 3-4 times that of old-fashioned sheeting with enclosed glass beads. Signs faced with this high intensity sheeting have, at reading distances, a luminance comparable to that of illuminated signs. This high luminance at night is caused by the beam of light from vehicle headlights, either on driving or passing beam, and the driver reads the signs from practically the same distance as by day. Modern reflectorized signs are easy to install since they do not need any electrical connection. They are vandalproof and their useful life is approximately 10 years. They communicate their message to motorists day and night with full clearness, and contribute effectively to traffic mobility and safety.
