Mapping Interdependencies Surrounding Car Ownership and Travel Choices in Britain Through Integrating Structural Equation Modeling with Latent Class Analysis

This paper presents a map of the distinct patterns in Britain of interdependencies among car ownership, demographic and socioeconomic profiles of residents, built-form and travel demand. Underlying the mapping are new results from the authors' latent class analysis (LCA) that is built on structural equation models (SEMs). The SEMs have been used in the authors' TRB2016 paper to examine the evolution of the interdependencies over time, and the authors extend them in this paper to examine geographical variations. Working with new and more detailed national travel survey data provided by UK Department for Transport, the authors have been able to map, for the first time, eight types of areas that have significantly different travel demand responses. There is clear evidence that such differences are conditioned by the built form, after rigorous controls of self-selection, spatial sorting and endogeneity effects as well as fuel prices. The findings provide concrete geographical categorisation of the evolving contexts across Britain for influencing local car ownership and travel choice trends. The results are cogent to defining spatially adapted strategies for planning new transport and land use interventions, particularly in view of the devolved local transport planning and investment responsibilities. The analytical framework presented here represents a new, generic mapping tool for cities and regions that have good household-interview-based travel surveys.
