SOME RESULTS OF AN INVESTIGATION OF BEARINGS OF MARINE MECHANISMS WITH HIGH-SPEED ROTATION SHAFTS
The expediency of replacing antifriction bearings with slide bearings in supporting assemblies of a centrifugal blower drive of the 4D19/30 diesel engine (2-cycle, four cylinders, 160 hp, 500 rpm) was investigated at the Nikolayev Shipbuilding Institute im. Academician S. O. Makarov. The main parameters of the slide bearings were determined as functions of the oil temperature and pressure at the inlet as well as the amount of oil passing through the bearing, and the blower rpm and the journal-thrust bearing temperature were determined relative to the oil pressure at the inlet. The time dependent mean mechanical friction surface wear (for the support and thrust bearings and their neck journals) was established and the analysis of it revealed that during the first 500 hours of operation the bearings were running in and the friction surfaces practically were not operating normally. It is concluded that the friction heat has to be dissipated by appropriate bearing design and proper selection of the play of the bearing rather than by increasing the oil pressure at the inlet.
