Carsharing Service Adoption in a Dual-Mode Setting: A Station-Based and Free-Floating Case Study

This paper presents a case study on the service adoption by users in a dual-mode setting i.e., when both types of service, station-based (SBcs) and free-floating (FFcs), are available. This study aims to provide empirical evidence to carsharing operators willing to expand their current operations with a new FFcs service and want to understand the impacts it can have on service adoption and the use of both types of service. A method is presented to assess four types of indicators for different expansion zones: new SBcs (1) and new FFcs (2) member adoption, SBcs to FFcs (3) and FFcs to SBcs conversion rate (4). A transactional dataset of Communauto, Montreal, from July 2013 to April 2017 is used to assess these indicators. First, through a descriptive analysis, the paper investigates the evolution of the four proposed indicators for five zones. Then, a negative binomial model is used to explore various covariates effects. The carsharing level of activity, measured as the number of active members in a zone, predicts a significant portion of the adoption and conversion rate variance. Other factors related to the proximity to mass-transit hubs, SBcs station saturation, and time since the service implementation also explain a zone performance. Finally, a second set of negative binomial models are fitted to assess the zone performance when it’s not part of the service area. Distance to service areas seems to be an important factor where 91% of the new FFcs adoption occurs within a 570 meters range.
