Understanding Women's Needs as Determinants of Mode Choice: A Case Study of University of Alabama at Birmingham
The surface transportation system is essential for responding to women’s needs in terms of safety, security, convenience, and reliability. However, little is known about these needs as determinants of mode choice for employed women and female university students. This study analyzed survey responses from 7,026 women who were employed or enrolled at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) at the time of the survey. Analysis results focus on women’s needs and preferences and how they affect their mode choice of personal automobiles, public transit, and shared mobility alternatives. This study is significant, as it is a pioneer attempt to quantify women-focused needs in an effort to move from utilitarianism to need-based mode choice models.
