Design and Analysis of a New Rural Intersection Safety Warning System

Rural highways have numerous minor roads and carry mixed traffic, the existing safety facilities do not guarantee driving safety. This research proposes a new Rural Intersection Conflict Warning System (RICWS), which aims to reduce intersection conflicts caused by a lack of sight distance. The system collects real-time vehicle data by radar detectors, and transmits the results to drivers on the major road in a timely manner via roadside warning lights. In this research, the principle of the RICWS is discussed in detail, including how to collect the vehicle dynamics data, and how to identify and avoid potential collisions. To ensure safety, the reaction time of the driver was also taken into account. Through a driving simulation experiment, the speed prediction model after implementing the RICWS was obtained, and the effectiveness of the new system evaluated. To verify the reliability of the proposed warning logic and algorithm, numerical simulations were carried out via Matlab/Simulink co-simulation. The experimental and simulation results indicate that the proposed system enables drivers to perceive the conflicting vehicles in advance, avoid speed mutation phenomena and ensure driving safety on rural highways.
