Empirical Analysis of Large-Scale Multimodal Traffic with Multisensor Data: A Case Study in the Shenzhen Network

An efficient tool for analyzing interaction between private traffic and public transport is three-dimensional (3D) macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) connecting car density, bus density with space-mean flow of vehicles or passengers. Few empirical studies have investigated the existence and properties of 3D MFD in large-scale networks and to the best knowledge not at the scale of a mega city. For investigating the vehicle MFD (vMFD) in the center of Shenzhen, a data fusion algorithm is proposed for estimating taxi penetration rates for different regions of the city compared to private vehicles. The spatial heterogeneity of taxi penetration rate is considered by partitioning each region into eight smaller subregions, and its temporal heterogeneity is also captured by the dynamic rate. With respect to public transport MFD, a data fusion method for estimating the average passenger density per bus is proposed. At the next step the impact of travel delay and dwell times on bus flows is analyzed by comparing the vMFDs of public transport. Moreover, the complexity and its possible explanations of the passenger MFD (pMFD) of public transport are also discussed. Taking the data of evening peak as an example, the 3D MFDs for three partitioned regions are presented and fit by exponential functions. As a result, the insights of interaction between multiple transport modes can be acquired. For instance, the optimal proportion between bus density and car density is illustrated in the corresponding 3D MFDs for maintaining the best passenger service level (i.e. the maximal passenger flow).
