A SIMPLIFIED METHOD FOR CALCULATING SLIDING BEARINGS FOR SHIP POWER PLANTS

Simple relations are established that permit rapid and sufficiently accurate determination of the working capacity of sliding bearings. The work was done because the usual simplified method gives great errors in determining the required dimensions for prolonged operation with minimal losses under conditions of fluid friction. Over 700 bearings with diameters D of 50--500 mm, length-to-diameter ratios L/D of 0.5 -- 1.0, circular velocities v of 5--40 m/sec, unit loads p of 5--40 kg/sq. cm., relative clearances s of 0.0008--0.0012, oil viscosity (at 50C) n of 6-22 centistoke, and initial oil temperatures of 35-45C were calculated on a Ural-2 digital computer. Graphs of the simplified relations, h(min) = F (D,v,p), h(min) = G(L/D), h(min) = H(n), h(min) = I(s), where h(min) is the minimum thickness of the oil layer, are plotted. Analysis of the graphs gives the average exponent of the curves h(min) = F(D,v,p). The principal parameters of the bearing give h(min) = (ABCDv/p) to the 0.55 power, where B = (2L/D) to the 1.32 power, C = n/8.5 and the coefficient A is given in tables. A simplified method is proposed for determining the minimum allowable thickness of the oil layer.
