THE PROSPECTS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF ELECTRIC DRIVE CIRCUITS FOR ICEBREAKERS
The prospects of electric propulsion for icebreakers and methods of control are discussed. Icebreakers must be able to penetrate 2 m of shore ice (which requires a power of 3--4 hp/T). In the first DC system of generator-motor, a diesel drove the generator. Replacing the diesel with a nuclear reactor and steam turbine increased the power by 1.7 in the same size ship. Two new systems were used to increase power: 1) synchronous generators and asynchronous motors with frequency regulation of the speed by controlled silicon rectifiers; 2) synchronous generators and DC motors connected through a controlled or uncontrolled silicon rectifier (G-R-M system). There are few data on use of the high-power controlled rectifier; most work has been done on the G-R-M system with uncontrolled rectifiers. The G-R-M system has two variants: a) feeding the DC motor through a rectifier from an m-phase synchronous generator with regulation of the generator voltage and motor current; b) two series-connected synchronous generators on the same shaft with control accomplished by regulating the excitation polarity of the second generator. Seven characteristics of the G-R-M system are analyzed.
