A study of visual interface on development of vehicle to X communication system for motorcycles

Studie ueber ein visuelles Interface bei der Entwicklung von "Vehicle to X-Kommunikationsssystemen" fuer Motorraeder

The paper presents the development of visual interfaces on an advanced rider assistant system using vehicle to X communication. Motorcycles have less possibilities to provide a visual information about an object that is not directly visible for the rider and, moreover, can provide less the information at the same time than automobiles. The authors developed an experimental V2X system for motorcycles based on the DRIVE C2X specifications. To evaluate the system the behavior of the vehicle and the driver were measured in a field operational test. There were three test riders (no ITS experts), and the use cases were IVS (In-Vehicle Signage), CBW (Car Breakdown Warning), and RWW (Road Works Warning). The interfaces for the rider were an LCD, 3 LEDs, and a helmet mounted speaker. The test showed that the effect on the rider behavior differs depending on the use cases. Information like distance to the object, urgency of the situation and the event pictogram (symbol/icon) improves the acceptability by the rider.
