100 Years of metropolitan rail strategy in Sydney: lessons for the 21st century

This year represents the 100th anniversary of the publication by the NSW Government of the Report on the Proposed Electric Railways for Sydney by John Bradfield. This landmark report set the agenda for a comprehensive city and suburban electric rail network strategy for Sydney. It ultimately led to the construction of the city underground railway, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the comprehensive electrification of the suburban rail network. The authors reviewed the plans of Bradfield along with another thirteen subsequent rail strategies to determine the lessons that can be learnt for the development and delivery of rail strategies in the current century. This paper explores the operating principles, objectives and proposals put forward and the extent to which they were implemented, progressed or informed future debate.
