The use of simulation modelling to improve the Melbourne Railways 1500 Volt DC traction power system

Metro Trains Melbourne has been developing a Strategy Plan for an improvement to the performance of the existing Melbourne 1500 Volt dc Railway Traction Power System. This is in accordance with Metro Trains Melbourne’s Asset Management approach to improving the performance of the train operations to a standard suitable for today and tomorrow. A systematic understanding and evaluation of the System was needed in order to create the Strategy Plan. A key part of this was the use of simulation modelling techniques to analyse the existing System, and to find effective and efficient solutions. During this process, it was found that an efficient way to illustrate and communicate the performance and capability of the System was through a 5 Star classification. This paper looks at the aims, objectives, challenges, decisions, choice and methodology of the approach to the strategy plan and classification system.
