APPLICATION OF METEOROLOGY TO MARINE INTERESTS

The first paper by Kozo Hishida deals with activities of the Japan Meteorological Agency in relation to the prevention of calamities due to storms. The author presents general information on the storms (typhoons) in the western North Pacific (which accounts for 36% of the world's total), provides detailed descriptions of some typhoons and the resulting calamities and discusses the efforts of the Japan Meteorological Agency to minimize marine disasters. The paper by Max W. Mull "Forecasting of anomalous water levels for marine and coastal interests" is primarily concerned with programmatic aspects and does not include details of the prediction techniques for storm surges. The paper describes briefly the marine survice programme of the U.S. National Weather Service in so far as it involves warnings of storm surges or storm tides, and the efforts during the past year to extend this programme so far as practical to include the needed daily advisories concerning all anomalous water levels that are primarily meteorological in nature. The method for documenting the requirements is discussed in some detail, and the plans for implementing the service programme are described. The full text of the lecture presented by R. Ogden on the activities of the U.K. Meteorological Office in the forecasting for oil/gas drilling rigs in the North Sea has been published in the August 1972 number of the magazine "Weather" and therefore only the introduction and conclusion are included in this report. Experience of the Hydrometeorological Service of the U.S.S.R. in providing services to mariners and fisheries in northern waters and the Atlantic Ocean is described in the paper by F.S. Terziev; the text is published in the original Russian and also in an English translation.
