UGLANDS PROJECT SHIPS SCHEME

To overcome the frustration due to the lack of real and meaningful tasks left to ships officers, the firm A/S Uglands Rederi have made an honest attempt to hand back much responsibility to ships officers. The Captain of an ore carrier, his Chief Officer, Chief Engineer and Chief Steward were brought ashore and subjected to a month of intensive training. During this period they were instructed in the aims of the project, as well as management techniques designed to mold them into an efficient team, and given fresh insight into the actual financial part of the operation. The course was roughly divided into four main sectors-management and administration theory, shipowning management, operational economics and the preparation and maintenance of budgetary control. The distribution of authority between ship and shore was laid down, together with the outline of an efficient two-way information flow. It has been the job of the senior officers to transmit much of this new found knowledge to the other members of the crew and to encourage their participation in the economical running of the ship. The results were increased technical standards aboard, reduction of various expenses, increased interest and understanding for the total operation and most important of all, a real boost to morale.
