HEAVY WEATHER DAMAGE AVOIDANCE SYSTEM

Each time a ship is exposed to heavy weather, there is a probability that it will experience hull and/or cargo damage, experience local or total failure of the ship's structure, or experience delays due to reduction in speed and rerouting. The ship's Master has traditionally relied on his experience and judgement without the benefit of specific knowledge of the response of his ship to the sea or a direct guidance to corrective action. The Heavy Weather Damage Avoidance System monitors the response of the ship in all weather, and performs a statistical analysis of the monitored data. The statistical analysis enables the system to predict excessive stresses, acceleration and motion due to wave excitation. If the probability of this exceedance is critical, the system warns the ship's Master with an alarm and a data printout. In addition to the warning, the system guides the ship's Master in the avoidance of these responses through the aid of a maneuvering analysis. This is accomplished without a radical departure from the course and speed which is required to maintain the ship's schedule. The design of the Heavy Weather Damage Avoidance System incorporates a standard mini-computer, which allows the system to be adjusted to the specific needs of the particular ship and its route by the simple addition of computer software. The important features of this system are that it not only monitors the responses of the ship, but it statistically predicts the excessive responses before they actually occur and provides a maneuvering analysis which will reduce the probability of damage to the ship and cargo from occurring.
