MATSON CAN TAKE ISO AND 24 FT. CONTAINERS

Matson Navigation company has designed its new Bethlehem-built Hawaiian Enterprise and Hawaiian Progress to be equally suitable for ISO standard containers of 20 and 40 ft in length as well as its own 24 ft module. The key to this flexibility is not the cell structure itself, as much as in the hull design, which permits large open hold spaces without interior strength members. Important elements, however, are the portable transverse deck girders which can be bolted in various positions to suit different container lengths. Cell guides can be moved at will throughout the length of the ships hold. Any number of rows of differing lengths may be carried, as long as they add up to approximately 120 ft. Modification of the cell configuration can be accomplished during the normal annual overhaul period. Basically, the hull structure is a fully double-skinned U-section girder, the open jaw of which is linked at the bulkhead intervals by deep transverse boxes. Beneath these boxes, the bulkheads are reinforced by deep vertical and transverse stiffeners on both sides. The portable transverse deck girders which locate the portable cell guides and also serve as lead-ins, are simply bolted in place. Hatch closure is designed to be independent of the position of these girders.
