HULL FORM DEFINITION FOR DESIGN AND PRODUCTION--A COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF EXISTING FAIRING METHODS AND A NOVEL METHOD FOR TESTING FAIRING ACCURACY FOR DETAIL DESIGN AND PRODUCTION

Fully automated ship design will be achieved only when preliminary design and construction drawings use the same mathematical expressions. One of the steps along the way is the perfection of computerized fairing programs that can handle chines, sonar domes, bulbous bows and other abrupt changes in hull form. The FAIR TEST system is a set of computer programs developed to check computer faired lines. It has been successfully used for two ship designs and consists of the following subprograms: (1) PRESERV (Preservation of Form), (2) 3rd VIEW (Consistency Between Views), (3) SMOOTH (Smoothness). This paper presents these programs.
