INTERACTIVE OPTIMUM DESIGN OF TANKER STRUCTURES

Ship design is a competitive business where time saved in structural design and better design can produce a stronger ship using less metals and costing less to build. New techniques employing finite element analysis and the time saving advantages of computers to solve the involed mathematics offer the greatest areas for improvement. The current state of the art toward an optimum design for tanker structures shows a failure to completely automate the whole design process because the designers lose control. No urgent necessity to invest resources in this field has been recognized, since designers are able to find some design which satisfies the constraints, even if the obtained design is not optimal and the process is time consuming. Although accurate analysis is an essential basis for design, synthesis of a large structural system requires additional qualitatively different discipline. In this paper, a study and initial results in organizing a system for synthesis of the structure in the cargo sections of a modern oil tanker are presented.
