A FLOATING POWER PLATFORM FOR THE WEST COAST

Land siting of thermal power plants presents a number of problems which may be partly or totally eliminated by utilizing offshore siting concepts. This paper compares a number of offshore power plant siting concepts which are grouped in the following five categories: (1) floating ship-form hull; (2) floating submarine hull; (3) bottom mounted caisson; (4) artificial islands; and (5) floating platform-mounted plat (barge). These concepts are compared for potential use off the West Coast of the United States. A particular adaptation of one of the offshore concepts, the floating power platform (FLOPP) is described.
