SASP, A PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL SYSTEM FOR SHIPBUILDING ON INDIVIDUAL ORDERS
Shipbuilding daily production control has relied heavily on trial and error methods developed by lower level managers. These managers aim to optimize their organization which often leads management to feel that mass production will optimize the yeard as a whole. Man-hours of shipbuilding will never decrease so long as the slightest anxiety about the planning process exists, because surplus labor will always be reserved self-defensively for emergency use by the lower organizational level. An indispensable condition for promoting efficiency to get rid of axiety can be accomplished by planning the shipbuilding process backwards and building from the first stage on schedule. A computer-based production control system named SASP (Sasebo Scheduling Programme) was developed to overcome the restrictions of the old individual order system.
