TRANSPORTING FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES OVERSEAS
Over a 4-year period, 115 commercial shipments were observed, both in the United States and in Europe, and five formal overseas shipping tests were conducted using seven van containers. Two of the test shipments were accompanied by researchers continuously from shipping point to destination. Conventional and experimental refrigeration units, loading patterns, and load-securing devices were evaluated in van containers. Test shipments in the vans included full and mixed loads of fresh fruits and vegetables and one load of orange juice in glass bottles. Various systems of refrigeration and ventilation were used as the shipments moved by combinations of highway, rail, and ocean carrier services. The ocean carriers included conventional breakbulk vessels, combination breakbulk and container ships, and full container ships. Data was collected and comparisons were made on the shipping charges for breakbulk and containerized shipments.
