In order to overhaul its airport, Los Angeles is spending billions of dollars. As a result, cities all over the United States, such as Denver, Oakland (CA), Phoenix, and Washington, DC, are being inspired to invest in a similar manner. While other airports, such as Atlanta and Chicago's O'Hare, handle more people than Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) does, it is the country's top airport for originating and destination trips; as a result is must get more passengers in and out than any other comparable facility. For LAX, the arrival of the Airbus A380 in 2007 was the catalyst for the recent wave of upgrades - being able to accommodate the airbus was crucial to LAX's economic viability, but they realized they were lacking a space big enough to handle the airbus once it landed. Enhancing the travel experience is one of LAX's goals, achieved through aesthetic improvements, as well as automated processes, such as passport control machines, which can improve customer satisfaction through shorter lines. In addition, with the growing popularity of air travel making traffic worse, the airport is planning to bring mass transit light rail connections to the airport, which will involve the construction of an automated people mover train, as well as the completion of a new north-south light rail route by L.A. Metro.
