BREXIT: A Bolt from the Blue! – Red Sky in the Morning?

On June 23, 2016 the United Kingdom held a national referendum to assess whether the voting population wished the nation to remain a member or cease membership in the European Union (EU). The referendum resulted in 52% of the vote in favor of the exit, since nicknamed Brexit. The repercussions of the referendum continue to reverberate, not only across the U.K. but throughout Europe as Britain and Northern Ireland’s position remains unclear. This article reflects on the possible consequences to U.K. airlines and travelers. Initially, context is provided by postulating a detailed picture to the reader of the U.K.’s relationship with, and within, the EU and the current position with regard to EU aviation policy and its development over a number of years. The author discusses future consequences and scenarios, focusing around several key background events and results.
