Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR) in Cement Free Alkali Activated Sustainable Concrete

This report summarizes the findings of an experimental evaluation into alkali silica reaction (ASR) in cement free alkali-activated slag and fly ash binder concrete. The susceptibility of alkali-activated fly ash and slag concrete binders to deleterious ASR was evaluated in accordance with relevant ASTM standards. Also, ASR resistance of Alkali activated fly ash and slag concrete was compared to that of ordinary portland cement concrete (OPC) while exposed to ASTM C 1293 and ASTM C1567 tests. Special attention was given to assess the effectiveness of existing ASTM test methods (ASTM C 1293 and C1567) in identifying the occurrence of ASR in alkali-activated concrete (AAC). Additionally, influence of activator parameters including effect of binder type, activator concentration, activator type and solution to bonder ratio to the resistance of ASR in AAC was also evaluated. Finally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses were used to confirm or repudiate the ASTM standard test results.
