AUTOMATIC STEEL PLATE STOCK YARD
The application of computers in the world's shipbuilding industry has now moved to the stage of production application from the stage of research. The automatic steel plate stock yard which we shall describe in this article uses both large-scale computers and mini-computers for the main and sub-systems respectively. The computer systems installed in the yard controls directly the handling of cranes and conveyors used in warehousing, sorting and discharging a huge volume of large steel plates (maximum size of 4.5 m x 22.5 m in breadth and length with 20 ton in weight) daily and successfully automates the processes. Up to this time, the application of computers is restricted mainly to business-oriented data processing, design and numerically-controlled machines. We believe that our attempt here makes a valuable contribution in the field as the first application of computers in the process controller where operation of cranes, conveyers and other related facilities are directly controlled. In fact this marks a first step toward the complete unmanned operation of plants and factories in the future. In addition to outlining our system, we also introduce the reader to an integrated computerized data processing adopted throughout the shipyard and steel makers starting from order, rolling warehousing and stock discharging of steel materials.
