THE DEVELOPMENT AND INTEGRATION OF NUMERICAL CONTROL ACTIVITIES WITHIN A SHIPBUILDING ENVIRONMENT

The paper outlines the development of shipbuilding software and hardware systems over the past years. The development is traced from the initial activities aimed primarily at increasing flame cutting capacity and accuracy to the present shipbuilding software systems with separately grouped drafting flamecutting activities. By outlining the development over the period since the introduction of numerical control, the paper identifies the pointers which indicated the main path to the future. The paper gives particular attention to hardware and software development in the areas of drafting and flame cutting and the trend towards the removal of the paper tape as a data communication media. The position of the small and medium ship producer not yet utilizing numerical methods in either their design or production areas has not been ignored. A modular growth concept is proposed to allow new users to develop their system as the expertise of the shipyard personnel increases.
