THE FORAN SYSTEM

FORAN is an integrated system for ship design and production, based on the use of electronic computers. Its development began in 1963, within the Sener Marine Division. Since 1967 more than 60 ships have been or are being built using the System. As FORAN was initially developed to cover Sener's requirements as an Engineering Company, it differs considerably from other existing systems in the following aspects: Contrary to other systems whose development began in the production area, the development of the FORAN System began in the Ship Design area. A great effort was made to make the ship design process a very fast one, particularly as refers to the treatment of hull forms. Also, great attention was devoted to reduction of man-hours, both in the design process and in the production area. Basic development of the computer systems recognizes the work done by Admiral D.W. Taylor to generate ship designs using algebraic funtions.
